As the AIHL has advised a full or partial season would not be possible for 2021, the Sydney Bears will be focussing on three key outcomes as we look to build a solid player and management infrastructure for 2022 and beyond. The key focus will be around the areas of:
The senior playing group, coaching staff and committee have concluded it is not feasible for the Bears to participate in the Super Series as announced by the AIHL due to limited player availability because of other grades within IHNSW.
To that effect, we have encouraged players to use this year to further develop their competitive skills in Division 1 and ECSL leagues across NSW.
To support this, the Bears will begin regular training sessions that will focus on skills development as well as preparing junior players with the necessary skills they can take to current competitions and for the expectations of AIHL playing level.
Despite not being able to be involved in the Super Series, the Bears will be exploring avenues over the coming weeks to secure ice to play exhibition style games and will update our Season Ticket Holders and fans as we continue to finalise these plans.
As many of our fans know, the Bears are a not-for-profit organisation run by a volunteer led committee. A key focus for this year will be future proofing the club so that the Bears can continue to grow and adapt to the changing AIHL landscape.
To ensure the success of the club we will be focussing on developing systems to ensure the smooth running of the club from player to volunteer operations, marketing and administration.
We will continue to be as transparent as possible with our Season Ticket Holders, fans and wider hockey community as we develop these systems and put them into effect. We rely on our fans during these times so that we can mould the club to best serve our players and community. These updates will allow us to continue to bring the best quality hockey and entertainment product possible to our fans.
Fan Engagement & Club Culture
As a club we understand that without our incredibly passionate and loyal fans, we would not be able to have the success we have had over the years. We are committed to ensuring that despite COVID we will continue to bring our community together.
With the club looking at pathways to play some exhibition style games, you can rest assured we’re doing all we can to bring hockey back to the Bears Den.
We will also continue to work with current and previous sponsors to host some social events throughout the year where fans and players can interact with one another as COVID restrictions begin to ease around the state.
Your continued support is paramount to the ongoing success of the Bears Organisation. Please bear with us as we continue to navigate the challenges presented due to the pandemic as well as the ongoing operations of the club without a season.
If the pandemic has taught us anything it is that we are stronger together, we proved this when we won the Goodall Cup together, when we raised over $20,000 for the Australian Bushfire crisis together and we’ll prove it again as we lay the foundations for an even stronger 2022 AIHL Season. We are doing all we can to stay prepared so that when hockey is back the Bears will have what it takes to keep the Goodall Cup in Sydney.
